General Rules
- TSSAA Volleyball rules are in place, except for stated changes by MSYS.
- A team will consist of six players on the court at a time, with a minimum of four in order for the match to start, players arriving after the start of the game must enter the court as though they were rotating in. The players will rotate their position on the court in a clockwise manner. Players will sub in at the serve. All players must serve and rotate through completely.
- Teams may begin play with a minimum of four players. If a team has fewer than four players 15 minutes after start time, they forfeit the match.
- Kneepads are NOT required but are recommended
- A match will consist of best two out of three games. We will play all 3 games regardless of the outcome of the first two games. First two games are to 25 and the third game is to at least 15 (or referee discretion based on time). *We will not play the 3rd game in the playoffs if a team wins the first two games.
- A coin toss will be used to determine who serves first. Teams change ends after each game, except for the third game. The second game will begin with the receiving team of first game serving. The third game will begin with winners of initial coin toss.
- The first team to 25 (win by 2) wins the game. There is a cap of 28 for the first 2 games and 3 points more than the stated target score for the last game; all games must be won by two or more points.
- All matches must end within 5 minutes of the next match on the schedule, if a game reaches the time limit, the referee may adjust the target score for that game in order to stay on schedule.
- Rally scoring will be used, a team earns a point regardless as to whether they served or not.
- 1 thirty-second timeout will be allowed per team in a match. Coaches should make it clear whether he/she wants a timeout.
- “Volley-Lite” balls will be used for 4th grade and 5th/6th divisions. 7th and older will use regular volleyballs.
Service Rules
- A serve must be made from the designated serving area and can be underhand or overhand.
- Players may serve from the regulation end line or from the designated adjusted service line on that court.
- 4th grade, we will use a “triple ball” format. Players will serve from the 10ft attack line. The point will begin with a serve which is played to a side out and a point is awarded. Once the side out occurs, the coach from the serving team will toss a ball over the net to the opposing player in the center of the back row. The point will be played from there until a side out and a point is awarded. Once the 2nd side out occurs, the coach from the receiving team will toss a ball over the net to the player in the center of the back row. This 3rd point will be played out until there is a side out. At the end of that 3rd point, the ball will go to the other team for a serve. Serving team will rotate a substitute in on every serve. - 5th/6th players will be allowed two attempts to get the ball over the net on their first service of the DAY only. Only, if the serve does not go over the net on the first serve, will they will be allowed a second chance. If the ball does not make it over the net on the second attempt, a point will be awarded to the opposing team. If the first service makes it over the net, it counts, even if it does not land in bounds. The first serve re-do is ONLY for serves that do not make it over the net. A player continues to serve until the opponent wins a point or until the fifth serve. After the fifth consecutive serve, service will go to the opposing team.
- 7th & Older will not have any adapted rules. We will play high school rules with the only exception being that players will rotate clockwise and sub in on the serve.
